What is alcohol withdrawal syndrome?

Alcohol withdrawal syndrome occur when a person quits alcohol or cuts back on their prolonged consumption of alcohol.

Stages of alcohol withdrawal syndrome

The stages and duration  of alcohol withdrawal syndrome will depend on the individual. However, in most cases, people get over their symptoms within a week.

First stage

The first stage of symptoms like nausea, tremors, anxiety and insomnia usually starts after six hours of quitting the alcohol. The symptoms can last up to seven days.

Second stage

The second stage of symptoms like seizures usually starts during the first 48 hours and lasts up to a week.

Third stage

The third stage of symptoms involves the onset of delirium tremens (DT) and can start after 48 hours and lasts for about 2-3 days.

Stage four

During the fourth stage, a person can experience symptoms for weeks to months. This stage is called as post-acute withdrawal or PAWS.

How to get relief from alcohol withdrawal syndrome?

1. Try to eat consistently.  2. Consume non-alcohol beverages and avoid caffeine.  3. Drink plenty of water.  4. Seek out for support.  5. Take your medication as instructed.
