Mushrooms: Nutritional value and health benefits

Introduction

Mushrooms are fungi that come in various shapes, sizes and colours. They are low in calories, fat-free, cholesterol-free, gluten-free, and very low in sodium. They also provide protein, fiber, antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals

Antioxidants

Mushrooms contain antioxidants such as selenium, vitamin C, and choline that help protect your cells from damage caused by free radicals.

Vitamin D

Mushrooms are the only plant source of vitamin D, a nutrient that is essential for bone health, immune function and mood regulation. Vitamin D is normally produced by your skin when exposed to sunlight.

Fibre

Mushrooms are a good source of dietary fibre, especially the soluble fibre beta-glucan. Fiber can help you feel full longer, lower cholesterol levels, improve blood sugar control and promote a healthy gut microbiome.

Minerals

Mushrooms are rich in minerals such as copper, potassium, phosphorus and iron. Copper helps with energy production and iron utilisation. Potassium helps with fluid and electrolyte balance, nerve and muscle function.

Vitamin B

Mushrooms also contain B vitamins such as niacin (B3) and pantothenic acid (B5). Niacin helps with carbohydrate, protein and fat metabolism and DNA repair.
