Don’t you find it exhausting to carry your medical records every time you visit a hospital? Worry no more! The government of India has created the ABHA health card, a digital solution that allows you to manage your health records effortlessly. With this initiative, you can access your medical history anytime, ensuring a smoother and more convenient healthcare experience.
In this guide, you will discover everything about the ABHA health card, including its benefits, key features, eligibility criteria, creation process, and more.
The Ayushman Bharat Health Account (ABHA) card provides digital health services through its 14-digit unique code system. ABHA serves as a digital medical record which merges personal healthcare information to simplify services in the healthcare system.
Through the ABHA health card, users preserve medical information security when sharing their health records with healthcare providers to achieve superior patient treatment and medical coordination. With its simplified approach to healthcare operations, the ABHA program enhances India’s healthcare system, delivering quality medical services with improved efficiency to all citizens.
The following section highlights the ABHA health card benefits:
Unique Identification for Healthcare
Through your ABHA health card, you will gain easy access to all medical facilities across India without having to manage various medical records. As a result, your healthcare treatment becomes more efficient while reducing the chances of information errors.
Digital Storage of Health Records
With an ABHA health ID card, you no longer need to carry physical documents. Your Personal Health Records (PHR) are stored digitally, allowing you to share medical history with doctors whenever required. This ensures a well-coordinated treatment plan and easy access to past health details.
Easy Access to Healthcare Benefits
Your ABHA health ID links all your health-related benefits, including insurance policies from companies like Star Health Insurance and public health schemes. Instead of managing multiple documents, you get a unified platform where all your medical benefits are easily accessible in one place.
Secure and Consent-Based Data Sharing
Your medical data remains private and secure. No doctor or healthcare provider can access your records without your explicit consent. You have complete control over what information is shared and with whom, ensuring confidentiality at all times.
Beneficiary Addition Feature
After obtaining your ABHA health card, you will have the option to add a beneficiary. Although this feature is not yet available, it is expected to be introduced soon.
Connect with Verified Healthcare Professionals
The ABHA system lets you consult trusted and verified doctors for both in-person and online consultations. Whether you need a specialist or a general practitioner, you can be assured of receiving medical advice from qualified professionals.
Option to Add a Nominee
You can soon assign a nominee, such as a family member, to manage your health account. In emergencies, your nominee can access your medical details and make important healthcare decisions on your behalf.
Freedom to Activate or Deactivate
Owning an ABHA health card is entirely optional, and it is not a requirement for seeking medical care. You can generate an ABHA ID and deactivate it whenever you choose to discontinue its use.
Faster Insurance Claim Approvals
By linking your ABHA ID with your health insurance, you can speed up claim approvals. Hospitals can directly access your insurance details, making cashless claim processing much quicker and hassle-free.
Improved Medical Treatment
With your ABHA number, doctors can access your complete medical history, including past treatments, prescriptions, and test reports. This helps them make more accurate diagnoses and provide better, more personalized treatment.
Enhanced Data Security
The health ABHA card employs advanced encryption methods to safeguard your medical information. This ensures that your sensitive health data remains secure and protected from unauthorized access.
The ABHA (Ayushman Bharat Health Account) system consists of several essential components that enhance its efficiency and usefulness. Here is how each element contributes to a seamless healthcare experience:
Healthcare Professional Registry (HPR)
With HPR, you can access verified details of registered healthcare professionals. This is particularly useful if you need a specialist during a medical emergency but are unsure whom to consult.
HPR functions as a comprehensive directory where you can find a doctor’s specialization, experience, and credentials, ensuring you make informed healthcare decisions.
ABHA Number
When you complete all the instructions for the ABHA health card, you receive a unique 14-digit ABHA number. This number securely links your real-time medical records with your consent, eliminating the need to carry physical medical reports every time you visit a doctor.
ABHA Mobile App
The ABHA mobile app allows you to access your complete medical history anytime, anywhere. While you can view your records from multiple devices, only you control how your data is shared or managed, ensuring privacy and security.
Health Facility Registry (HFR)
The Health Facility Registry (HFR) helps you find verified healthcare facilities across India, including hospitals, clinics, and diagnostic centres. This feature saves time by instantly providing details about available medical services in your area.
You can create an ABHA health card free of cost by following these simple steps:
Step 1: Go to the official portal of the National Health Authority or download the ABHA app.
Step 2: Click on the ‘Create my ABHA number’ option.
Step 3: Choose whether you want to proceed using your Aadhaar card or driving license.
Step 4: Enter the required details, such as your Aadhaar number or PAN number.
Step 5: Verify your mobile number by entering the OTP sent to your registered mobile.
Step 6: Provide additional details like your name, gender, and date of birth.
Step 7: Tap on the ‘Submit’ button to complete the process.
Once you submit the form, your unique ABHA ID will be generated.
To apply for an ABHA health card, you must meet the following eligibility criteria:
Indian Citizenship
Only Indian nationals can register for an Ayushman Bharat Health Account (ABHA). Non-resident Indians (NRIs) are not eligible for this health ID.
Mandatory Aadhaar Requirement
A valid Aadhaar card is essential for getting an ABHA health card. Without it, you cannot proceed with the application.
No Restrictions Based on Category
The ABHA card is available to individuals from all social and economic backgrounds, including General, SC, OBC, and ST categories. This digital health account securely stores medical records for future access.
Income Criteria
The program mainly focuses on supporting financially weaker sections. While there is no strict income cap, families with an annual income of up to ₹2.5 lakh are primarily considered.
