Nose Bleed Treatment: Cost & When to See a Doctor

The cost of nose bleeding depends on the severity, ranging from free to several thousand rupees for complex medical interventions. In case of moderate nose bleeding, treatment may not be required, but for complex cases, prices can be sizeable, ranging from Rs. 10,000 to Rs. 30,000.

Medical Treatment Escalation for Nosebleeds

Doctors manage nosebleeds by starting with the simplest methods and escalating only if necessary:

  • First-Line Measures: These are the same as first aid: direct pressure and leaning forward. A doctor may also use a topical vasoconstrictor spray.
  • Cauterisation: If bleeding continues or the bleeding point is visible, the doctor will cauterise the vessel. Cost for clinic visit & cauterisation ranges from R 500 to Rs. 3,000.
  • Nasal Packing: If cauterisation isn't possible or doesn't work, nasal packing is the next step.  It usually costs somewhere between R 2,000 and Rs. 10,000.
  • Surgical Intervention: For severe, uncontrollable bleeds, a procedure called endoscopic sphenopalatine artery ligation (ESPAL) or arterial embolization may be necessary. These are major procedures and are the most expensive. It usually costs somewhere between R 50,000 and Rs. 1,50,000+.

There are other factors that you need to consider to treat nosebleeds and other underlying issues. You can use other medications like tranexamic acid to promote clotting and reduce bleeding.

What is First Aid for Nosebleeds?

In India, you can manage nosebleeds (epistaxis) at home with first aid and when necessary, through medical treatment. Mild nosebleeds are usually treated at home with certain first aid measures, which we will discuss here:

  • Sit Upright and Lean Forward: Sitting upright and leaning forward prevents blood from running down the throat, which can cause gagging or nausea.
  • Pinch the Soft Part of Your Nose: Use your thumb or index finger to firmly pinch the lower part of the nose for at least 10-15 minutes.
  • Apply a Cold Compress: Apply a cold compress or ice pack to the bridge of the nose or the neck to constrict blood vessels.
  • Avoid Blowing Your Nose: After the bleeding stops, advise the person to avoid blowing their nose or picking it up for several hours to prevent re-bleeding.

When to Seek Medical Intervention?

Certain situations which do not resolve with normal first aid warrant seeking medical intervention. Here, we will discuss when to seek medical intervention for nosebleeds, which are as follows:

  • Heavy Bleeding: If the bleeding is significant and does not stop after 20-30 minutes of applying pressure, you must seek medical intervention as soon as possible.
  • Follow-up Injury: Nosebleeds that occur after a head injury, fall, or accident should be evaluated by a doctor. These symptoms could indicate a broken nose or other serious injury.
  • Difficulty Breathing: If the bleeding is so severe that it interferes with your normal breathing, seek immediate medical attention.
  • Persistent Drainage Down the Throat: If blood continues to drain down the back of your throat despite trying to stop the bleeding. Immediately consult with a doctor to get the proper treatment as soon as possible.

Seek immediate medical attention if you experience symptoms like a faster heartbeat or shortness of breath. Consult your doctor to get immediate medical treatment.

Additionally, you can use a humidifier or saline spray to prevent dryness, which can contribute to nosebleeds. Avoid nose picking, forceful nose blowing, and certain medications, like aspirin or ibuprofen, to prevent nosebleeds.
