PCOD full form in medical terms is Polycystic Ovarian Disease. PCOD refer to a medical condition that affects women that results in the ovaries generating immature eggs that can form into cysts.  


PCOD full form symptoms a person with problems like hormonal imbalances, irregular periods, and other health issues. Doctors and medical researchers believe that a high level of insulin is one of the main causes of PCOS. Excess insulin triggers the body to increase the generation of androgen (male hormone), which suppresses ovulation. 


The average age of menopause is 51. Females with PCOS are likely to reach menopause about two years later than females without PCOS. PCOS doesn't go away with menopause, so one can continue to have symptoms.   

 

A Brief History of PCOD Full Form Medically 

 
In 1935, the modern study of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), earlier known as Polycystic Ovarian Disease (PCOD), started with the publication of a pivotal paper by Stein and Leventhal, although same conditions were described by earlier medical figures.  


This full form PCOD was first mentioned by Stein and Leventhal after they observed gross ovarian morphology in females with particular symptoms. 


In the 20th century beginning, Stein and Leventhal, endocrinologists, mentioned a particular medical condition in women characterized by oligo/amenorrhea (irregular periods), obesity, hirsutism (excess hair growth), and bilateral polycystic ovaries. They first named it "Stein-Leventhal syndrome".  


The later evolution of PCOD full form in English came over time. That medical condition came to be known as "Polycystic ovary disease" (PCOD) and later, as the medical term "Polycystic ovary syndrome" (PCOS).

 

What is PCOD? 


PCOD refers to a hormonal disorder seen in women of reproductive age, which causes enlarged ovaries with small cysts and high levels of male hormones (androgens). PCOD is a common reason for infertility and has significant impacts on overall health.   
The symptoms of PCOD are irregular menstrual cycles, infertility, excessive hair growth, acne, weight gain, skin tags and thinning hair or male pattern baldness. 


PCOD can be caused by a number of factors, like genetics, insulin resistance, hormonal imbalances, and environmental influences. Pelvic Examination, Blood Tests and Ultrasound are the main methods used by the medical practitioners for the PCOD diagnosis.  
For managing PCOD, it is recommended to completely avoid or limit refined carbohydrates, processed foods, sugary foods and drinks, and excessive dairy and red meat because these can result in insulin resistance and weight gain.  


Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) treatment combines methods like lifestyle changes, medications, and other therapies.  


Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) treatment uses medications like birth control pills, progestin therapy, clomifene, metformin and Letrozole. However, these medicines are always used only under the doctor's prescription. 


Electrolysis, lasers, and intense pulsed light (IPL) therapies and retinoids, antibacterial agents, and antibiotics are the therapies used in the Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) treatment.
