Full Form of ACL -  Anterior Cruciate Ligament

What is the full form of ACL Surgery?

ACL, full form, in medical terms, is an Anterior Cruciate Ligament. The ACL Surgery full form is Anterior Cruciate Ligament reconstruction surgery, which is a method to repair a torn ligament in the knee that links the thigh bone (femur) to the shin bone (tibia). ACL surgery full form is also called ACLR, which is anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction.

ACL tear can cause symptoms like a popping sound, knee pain, instability, swelling, and risk-bearing weight. Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) reconstruction surgery helps restore Knee Stability, prevent any further damage and enable a return to activity.

A Brief History of ACL Full Form Medically

In 1895, the first documented case of Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) repair was experimented with by Sir Arthur Mayo-Robson, with a successful 8-year follow-up showing good joint function. Initially, Galen first described ACL (circa 170 A.D.). But, a complete description of ACL injuries didn't happen till the 1850s when J. Stark described two patients with this condition. During a period of some 1600 years, the significance of the ACL was not likely to have been sufficiently appreciated.

What is ACL Surgery?

We have seen ACL surgery full form. ACL surgery, also called ACL reconstruction, is a process that involves replacing the torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) with a tendon graft taken from some other portion of your body or a donor, particularly using arthroscopic methods.

A torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) refers to a general knee injury that happens when the ACL is stretched or torn, mostly during activities involving sudden twisting or pivoting. The cost of ACL surgery in India can differ depending upon the type of surgery and the city.

In ACL Surgery, the surgeon will make a tunnel in the patient's bone to pass the new tissue through. Then the graft tissue will be properly positioned in the same place, similar to the old ACL, and kept in place using screws or staples that will be in the patient's knee permanently. ACL surgery is just a minimally invasive arthroscopic surgery. A minimally invasive arthroscopic uses smaller incisions than open surgeries and provides faster recovery with fewer health risks.

A few individuals can live and work normally with a torn ACL. However, many people have complained that their knees are unstable and might "give out" when they engage in physical activity. An unstable knee after an ACL tear can result in further knee damage.
