Managing Borderline Personality Disorder with Health Insurance Plans

Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) is a serious mental health condition that causes people to experience intense emotions. People living with BPD often struggle to manage anger, sadness, and anxiety, especially during stressful interactions with others. These emotional swings can happen quickly, which tends to make everyday life and relationships very difficult.

Mental health professionals categorize BPD as part of a group called "Cluster B" personality disorders. These disorders are known for dramatic, unpredictable, and often risky behaviour. Most personality disorders, including BPD, begin during the teenage years or early adulthood and follow long-term patterns. Many people with BPD might not even realise they have it, and they may believe their behaviour is normal because it feels so familiar to them.

Who Can Develop Borderline Personality Disorder?

Borderline personality disorder usually starts showing signs during the teenage years when personality development is still ongoing. While almost anyone can develop BPD, it is more likely if there is a family history of the disorder or if the person has struggled with other mental health issues like depression and anxiety. Statistics indicate that about 75% of individuals diagnosed with BPD are female. However, some experts suggest that the prevalence among men may be underreported due to potential misdiagnosis or underdiagnosis.

Insurance Coverage for BPD

Until a few years ago, most health insurance policies in India rarely covered mental health conditions like BPD. Insurance companies generally excluded mental illnesses from coverage and treated them separately from physical health.

However, the situation is improving. In 2017, the Indian government passed the Mental Healthcare Act, which made it mandatory for insurance companies to treat mental health issues just like physical illnesses.

Section 21(4) of the Act requires every insurer to provide medical insurance for mental illnesses on the same basis as for physical health conditions. This was a huge step forward for people living with BPD and other mental health disorders.

Following the Act, the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) issued guidelines directing all insurers to include mental health coverage in their products.

What Treatments Are Covered Under This Insurance

Treatment for BPD typically involves therapy, medication, and occasionally hospitalization during crises. Different insurance policies and providers may offer varying levels of coverage for these treatments.

Some of the common treatments that insurance often covers include:

  • Psychotherapy: Dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT) is the most effective form of therapy for BPD. Cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) and other types of talk therapy may also be covered.
  • Medications: While there is no specific drug approved solely for BPD, medications like antidepressants or anti-anxiety drugs may be prescribed to help manage symptoms. These medications are usually covered under your prescription drug plan.
  • Hospitalisation: If someone with BPD is in immediate danger of self-harm or suicide, short-term hospital stays may be necessary. Insurance often covers these emergency services, though you may need prior authorisation.
  • Outpatient Programs: Some insurance plans also cover intensive outpatient programs (IOPs) or partial hospitalisation programs (PHPs) that offer structured treatment during the day while allowing the person to return home at night.

Things to Watch For

While coverage exists, getting it can sometimes be tricky. Here are a few things to keep in mind:

  • Pre-authorisation: You might need to get the insurance company’s approval before starting some treatments.
  • In-network providers: Consulting therapists and doctors within your insurance network typically results in lower out-of-pocket expenses.
  • Limits on sessions: Some plans set a limit on the number of therapy sessions they cover per year, although mental health parity laws have made this less common.
  • Deductibles and co-pays: Even if your plan covers a service, you may still need to pay part of the cost out of pocket.

Borderline Personality Disorder can be a challenging and painful condition. However, effective treatments are available and insurance often covers them. By understanding your coverage options, you or your loved one can access the care that supports a more stable and fulfilling life. Do not hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider and your insurance company to explore your options.
