Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) is a serious mental health condition that causes people to experience intense emotions. People living with BPD often struggle to manage anger, sadness, and anxiety, especially during stressful interactions with others. These emotional swings can happen quickly, which tends to make everyday life and relationships very difficult.
Mental health professionals categorize BPD as part of a group called "Cluster B" personality disorders. These disorders are known for dramatic, unpredictable, and often risky behaviour. Most personality disorders, including BPD, begin during the teenage years or early adulthood and follow long-term patterns. Many people with BPD might not even realise they have it, and they may believe their behaviour is normal because it feels so familiar to them.
Borderline personality disorder usually starts showing signs during the teenage years when personality development is still ongoing. While almost anyone can develop BPD, it is more likely if there is a family history of the disorder or if the person has struggled with other mental health issues like depression and anxiety. Statistics indicate that about 75% of individuals diagnosed with BPD are female. However, some experts suggest that the prevalence among men may be underreported due to potential misdiagnosis or underdiagnosis.
Until a few years ago, most health insurance policies in India rarely covered mental health conditions like BPD. Insurance companies generally excluded mental illnesses from coverage and treated them separately from physical health.
However, the situation is improving. In 2017, the Indian government passed the Mental Healthcare Act, which made it mandatory for insurance companies to treat mental health issues just like physical illnesses.
Section 21(4) of the Act requires every insurer to provide medical insurance for mental illnesses on the same basis as for physical health conditions. This was a huge step forward for people living with BPD and other mental health disorders.
Following the Act, the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) issued guidelines directing all insurers to include mental health coverage in their products.
Treatment for BPD typically involves therapy, medication, and occasionally hospitalization during crises. Different insurance policies and providers may offer varying levels of coverage for these treatments.
