Metabolic syndrome is a collection of health conditions that together significantly increase the risk of developing severe conditions including Type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and stroke. The Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) has released a newly developed list of pre-existing diseases and coverage that helps people with such issues. A pre-existing condition refers to any health issue that an individual had before buying a health insurance policy.

 

According to the IRDAI, conditions diagnosed within 36 months before purchasing a policy are typically considered pre-existing diseases. However, the exact definition and classification can vary by insurer.

 

These generally include chronic health issues, including thyroid disorders, Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, asthma, and similar long-term conditions.

 

What is the Waiting Period for Pre-existing Diseases?

 

Most health insurance providers develop their policies in such a way that they cover pre-existing diseases, but only after a waiting period. During this period, if you require treatment for a pre-existing condition, the insurer may reject any claims related to that condition.

 

Note that terms and conditions designed to cover pre-existing conditions differ from plan to plan. In general, you need to wait at least 12 months and a maximum of 36 months to get coverage for a pre-existing disease.

 

Buying health insurance for pre-existing diseases is a viable option for people who suffer from conditions that increase the risk of long-term health issues. It eliminates the worry about fund management and ensures better treatment at the right time.
